THE ODDS is a post-apocalyptic action-comedy. If that sounds like an unusual combination – well, that's the idea.
I grew up inhaling an eclectic array of pop-culture. When I was six, I locked myself in a closet under the stairs to read all seven CHRONICLES OF NARNIA in one shot. The first movie I ever owned was RETURN OF THE JEDI (I got it for my seventh birthday). I discovered my older siblings' piles of comic books soon after, and as I got older, I encountered other classics of fantasy and science-fiction: DUNE, THE ROAD WARRIOR, and of course, STAR WARS. In adulthood, I got to know the work of other giants, such as Joss Whedon (FIREFLY, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL) and Neal Stephenson (CRYPTONOMICON, SNOW CRASH, ANATHEM).
But more than anything else, THE ODDS is my extended ode to John Carpenter's BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA and its redoubtable goofball hero, Jack Burton. To be sure, I sampled the DNA of many a gold-hearted scoundrel to generate the hero of my novel – including Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds – but I owe the greatest debt to Mr. Carpenter, screenwriter W.D. Richter and Mr. Burton's catlike reflexes.
There's never been a better time to self-publish. To that end, I've gone through an extensive editing and revision process, thanks to some wonderful readers. My goal is to secure a home in traditional publishing eventually, but for now, I invite you to come with me as I venture out with the first volume of a larger sci-fi trilogy I've conceived. I've already completed book two, THE REMNANTS, and I plan to write the final two volumes, THE OCEANS and THE PALACES, in the near future. (I know the header of this website calls the series a trilogy, but the more I thought about the end of this story, the more I saw happening. So let's call it the "Increasingly Inaccurately Named Deadblast Trilogy.")
I plan to release THE ODDS later this year. I'll announce a formal release date in the coming weeks.
Also, huge thanks to designer and concept artist Nils Jeppe of Enderra.com for his beautiful desert wallpaper, which I used as an element in the design of the background of this site.

Robert J. Peterson made up his first stories as a kid with a pencil and notebook paper. Over the years, he started writing fiction formally, and he fell in love with the novel at an early age. He completed his first novel at the end of college. He's written five more since then, with many more to come.
His other novels include the action-comedy DEVIL'S JUKEBOX (sort of THE STAND meets SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT); the ISLAND CIRCUS CYCLE, which includes two novels: REVIVAL THEATER THUNDERDOME and COUGAR CLINKSCALES' ISLAND CIRCUS; book two of the Deadblast Trilogy, THE REMNANTS; and the young-adult sci-fi action novel OMEGABALL.
He grew up in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, and although the unusual world of the Deadblast Trilogy doesn't look like anywhere he's ever lived, Robert's love of small towns lurks in the background of THE ODDS, which is about many things, including the intersecting rivalries and grudges found in small-town life.
A graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, he co-founded the pop-culture emporium CC2K. He's written for newspapers and websites all over the country, including the Marin Independent Journal, PerformInk, Space.com, the Telluride (Colo.) Daily Planet, Gridiron Goddess, CC2K and Geekscape.net. He's appeared as a pop-culture guru on the web talk show Comics on Comics.
As a screenwriter, he has two completed works. He's also done some script polishing.
In addition to his writing, Robert is a graphic designer and web developer who specializes in open-source technologies like Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal. He designed this website himself, using Joomla as its CMS. As a designer, he has built postcards, business cards, logos and many other websites. He would also love to design more mood boards for motion pictures.
You can learn more about Robert at his official website, RobertJPeterson.com.
His friends call him Bob.

Watch the book trailer for THE ODDS below!
The apocalypse happened, but no one knows how.
After the mysterious cataclysm of deadblast, all that's left is a barren world ruled by a high-powered caste of bookies, THE ODDS.
Scurrying around underneath is our hero, Eldridge – a big-hearted, bumbling drifter with an estranged family he loves dearly. He’s deep in debt and deathly sick, so he places a bet predicting the day he’ll die.
If he wins, he can go to his grave knowing that his family will be safe, but when he returns to his hometown – the subterranean city of Dedrick – to collect, he gets some bad news: He’s going to live.
So it’s on to plan B – a high-stakes battle-tournament that pits real-life chess avatars against each other in random-chance brawls-to-the-death.
But Eldridge doesn’t know that someone’s gamed the tournament to pit him against an old friend who’s now a bitter enemy. As Eldridge fights his way through the tournament, he's forced to face up to his past in order to secure a future for himself and his family.
THE ODDS is coming soon!
